As of 2026, over 5,000 universities and programmes worldwide accept the Duolingo English Test (DET). Acceptance has grown sharply since 2020 when the pandemic forced test centres to close. Most major US, UK, Canadian and Australian universities now list DET alongside IELTS and TOEFL — but acceptance is institution-specific, not guaranteed for every programme within a university.
Top US universities that accept DET
Among the universities that accept DET for graduate admissions: MIT, Stanford (many departments), Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Boston University, Northeastern, University of Illinois, Purdue, University of Michigan, Penn State, and many others. Scores typically required: 115–125 for competitive master's programmes. Always confirm at the specific programme level — some departments within a university may still require TOEFL or IELTS.
UK universities that accept DET
Many UK universities including UCL, University of Edinburgh, King's College London, University of Manchester, and Sheffield accept DET for postgraduate programmes. UK minimum: typically 120–125. Note: UK Student Visa (UKVI) requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — IELTS UKVI or Trinity — DET does not satisfy UK visa requirements. DET can satisfy the university offer, but you may still need IELTS for the visa itself.
Canadian universities that accept DET
University of Toronto, UBC, McGill, University of Waterloo, University of Alberta, and many others accept DET. Canadian minimum scores: 115–125. Same caveat as UK: Canadian study-permit applications to Immigration IRCC accept IELTS, TOEFL, CELPIP — DET is not currently on the IRCC approved list for the visa itself.
Australian universities that accept DET
Several Australian universities including Monash, Deakin, La Trobe, and RMIT accept DET. However, the Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) requires IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or CAMBRIDGE — DET is not accepted by the Department of Home Affairs for the visa. You may use DET for the university offer but will need a different test for the visa.
