Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a 12-month work authorisation for F-1 students that lets you work in a job related to your field of study in the US after graduation. You apply to USCIS through your Designated School Official (DSO), not directly to an employer. OPT is separate from H-1B.
STEM OPT extension
If your degree is in a STEM field (classified as STEM by the Department of Homeland Security CIP-code list) and your employer enrolls in E-Verify, you can extend OPT by an additional 24 months — giving you 3 years total of US work authorisation. This span covers multiple H-1B lottery cycles.
Key timing rules
You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before graduation but no later than 60 days after. The EAD (Employment Authorization Document) processing takes 3–5 months, so apply early. Start date on the EAD is what matters — you cannot work before the printed start date.
STEM extension timing
Apply for the STEM extension no later than 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Your employer's E-Verify enrollment must be confirmed, and you file Form I-983 (Training Plan). Missing the 90-day window means a gap in authorisation.
What if H-1B does not come through
H-1B is a lottery (roughly 1-in-4 odds for a normal cap-subject petition). If you are not selected, STEM OPT gives you 2 more lottery chances. Options after that include O-1 (extraordinary ability), L-1 (if you join a company with a US office from abroad), EB-1, or transferring to a different status. Many Indian students return to India, gain more experience, and re-apply.
