What Band 6 requires in Listening

IELTS Listening is 40 questions across 4 recordings (a conversation, a monologue, an academic discussion and a lecture), played ONCE, in about 30 minutes. The same Listening test is used for Academic and General Training.

For Band 6 specifically: you need about 23/40 correct out of 40.

Step-by-step plan to Band 6 in Listening

  1. Know the target. For Listening, Band 6 is about 23/40 correct out of 40 (boundaries shift slightly per test).
  2. Diagnose. Take a free IELTS Listening mock to see your current band and your specific weaknesses.
  3. Tactic 1. Read the questions and predict answers before the audio plays.
  4. Tactic 2. Obey the word limit (e.g. 'NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS').
  5. Tactic 3. If you miss one, let it go and keep listening — don't freeze.
  6. Tactic 4. Drill spelling, names and numbers — they are easy marks.
  7. Practise under timing. Do timed Listening sections until you hit about 23/40 correct out of 40 two or three times in a row.

Common mistakes that keep you below Band 6

How to reach Band 6 faster

Train with a range of accents (British, Australian, North American), do full timed sections, and review every wrong answer to see whether it was vocabulary, spelling or a lapse in concentration.

💡
Section 1 gap-fills usually ask for a name, date or number — drilling these to spell accurately recovers the easy marks most students lose.

The arithmetic of Band 6 in Listening

In Listening, Band 6 is 23 correct out of 40. Band 6.5 is 27 — 4 more questions. That is the whole distance, and it is worth seeing as a number rather than as a band: 4 questions is typically one careless transfer error, one misread instruction, and one question abandoned under time pressure. Half a band is usually not a knowledge problem.

Because there is no negative marking, a blank is strictly worse than a guess — every unanswered question is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not. Boundaries also shift slightly between test versions, so treat 23/40 as the working target and aim a question or two above it rather than exactly at it.

How section bands become your overall band. Your overall IELTS band is the average of all four section bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band — and the rounding runs upward at the quarter. An average of 6.75 is reported as 7.0; an average of 6.5 stays 6.5; an average of 6.6 is reported as 6.5, not 7.0. The practical consequence is that Listening is worth exactly one quarter of your result, and lifting your weakest section by half a band moves your average by 0.125 — often not enough on its own. If you need a whole band overall, two sections have to move, and it is usually cheaper to take your two weakest up than to push an already-strong section higher.

Where most institutions actually set the bar. Many universities and nearly all migration and registration routes publish a per-section minimum alongside the overall figure. Where they do, your lowest section is what counts and a strong average will not rescue it. Check whether the requirement you are working toward is "overall 6" or "6 in each" before you build a study plan around it — they call for genuinely different preparation.
