What Band 7.5 actually requires across four sections
Your overall IELTS band is the mean of your four section bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band, and the rounding runs upward at the quarter — an average of 7.25 is reported as 7.5, while 7.1 is not. That single rule is the most misread part of IELTS scoring, and it is why Band 7.5 does not mean 7.5 in everything.
You do not need 7.5 in every section. Holding two sections at 7.5, these combinations in the other two still average out to an overall 7.5:
- 6 and 8, with 7.5 and 7.5 in the other two — average 7.25, reported as 7.5.
- 6 and 8.5, with 7.5 and 7.5 in the other two — average 7.38, reported as 7.5.
- 6 and 9, with 7.5 and 7.5 in the other two — average 7.50, reported as 7.5.
- 6.5 and 7.5, with 7.5 and 7.5 in the other two — average 7.25, reported as 7.5.
This is worth knowing before you plan, because it changes where the effort goes. Lifting your strongest section from 7.5 to 8.0 buys you the same 0.125 of average as lifting your weakest from 7.0 to 7.5 — but the second is almost always the cheaper half-band to win, and it is the one that also protects you against a per-section minimum.
The catch that undoes all of this. Many universities, and nearly every migration and professional-registration route, publish a per-section minimum alongside the overall figure. Where they do, an averaged Band 7.5 carrying a weak section does not qualify — your lowest section is your result. Before you build a plan around averages, check whether your requirement reads "overall 7.5" or "7.5 in each". They demand genuinely different preparation, and the difference is usually discovered too late.
What 7.5 looks like in the marked sections. In Listening and Reading, Band 7.5 is around 32 correct out of 40. There is no negative marking, so an unanswered question is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not — never leave a blank. Boundaries shift slightly between test versions, so treat 32/40 as the working target and aim a question or two above it. Writing and Speaking have no raw score at all: each is the average of four published criteria, so one weak criterion costs you a quarter of that section.
