Why registration English catches out strong candidates

The requirement for the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is IELTS Academic 7.0 overall — at least 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and 6.5 in Writing. — and it is a substantially harder bar than the same test set for a university place. Clinicians who use English every working day routinely miss it, for reasons that have very little to do with their clinical English.

A realistic sequence. Confirm the exact current requirement with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in writing, because published requirements change and a forum post is not a source. Sit one full timed IELTS Academic mock to find which skill is actually short — most people guess wrong. Decide IELTS or OET on the basis of that diagnosis rather than on habit. Then work almost exclusively on the weak skill, and only book when you are clearing the bar consistently in that skill, not on average.

There are 181 free IELTS practice tests here covering 3,850 questions — counted from the test files rather than estimated — across Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking. Take a full timed IELTS mock → and check your Writing against the criteria with the free band checker, since Writing is the skill most likely to hold up your registration.

Requirements are set by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and change without notice. Everything here is for planning — confirm the current standard on the regulator's own website before booking a test or paying an application fee.
