Duolingo English Test: Format & Why It's Booming

The ~1-hour, at-home, adaptive DET — how it's structured, the 10–160 score, and why 5,500+ universities now accept it.

The big picture

One hour, at home, adaptive

The Duolingo English Test (DET) takes about an hour on your own computer with a webcam — no test centre. The main graded section is adaptive: questions get harder or easier based on your answers, and there's no fixed number of questions — it ends when the scoring engine is confident of your level.

💡
Real example: Because it's adaptive, two test-takers can see different questions and a different number of them. Do well early and you'll get harder items that let you reach a higher score.
🧠 Memory hook: No fixed length — it stops when it's sure of your level. Early answers set the ceiling.

Mixed tasks, plus samples sent to universities

Rather than four separate sections, the DET mixes short task types across reading, listening, speaking and writing. Near the end you record a longer Writing Sample and Speaking Sample (video) that are shared with the institutions you send scores to, alongside your number.

💡
Real example: So an admissions officer sees both your score AND a short video and writing sample — meaning your real communication, not just the number, is on show. Treat those samples seriously.
🧠 Memory hook: Score + a video + a writing sample all go to the university. The samples count too.

Scored 10–160

The DET reports an overall score from 10 to 160 in 5-point steps, which is the average of four skill subscores (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), rounded to the nearest 5. It also gives integrated subscores (see the scoring note).

💡
Real example: A university asking for 'DET 120' wants an overall 120 — but many also set minimum subscores, so a strong overall with one weak skill can still fall short.
🧠 Memory hook: 10–160 overall = average of the 4 skills. Check subscore minimums too.

Why it's exploding — and its one limit

The DET is cheaper (~$65 vs $200+), faster (results in ~48 hours) and taken at home, and it's now accepted by 5,500+ universities, especially in the US. Its main limit: it is not on the approved list for some visa/immigration routes (e.g. UK visas), so confirm your destination accepts it.

💡
Real example: For US university admission the DET is often ideal; for a UK Student visa you'll usually still need IELTS UKVI. Always check both the university AND the visa route.
🧠 Memory hook: Great for US admissions, cheap and fast — but check visa acceptance separately.
