PTE Speaking: Read Aloud, Describe Image & Retell
PTE Speaking combines multiple task types in one go. Here's how to approach each — Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image and Retell Lecture.
PTE Speaking task overview
PTE Speaking includes Read Aloud (scan and speak naturally), Repeat Sentence (listen and repeat accurately), Describe Image (describe a chart or photo in 40 seconds), Retell Lecture (listen to a 60–90 second academic lecture, then retell it in 40 seconds). The computer scores pronunciation, fluency, intonation and content.
Read Aloud strategy
Scan the text quickly for key words and punctuation. Read at a natural, moderate pace (not too slow, not rushed). Use appropriate intonation and stress on important words. Avoid stumbling — if you make a small error, keep going smoothly. The score rewards natural, fluent speech over perfection.
Repeat Sentence technique
Listen carefully the first time. If you miss a word, do your best to approximate. Speak as soon as the recording ends (do not delay). Aim for accuracy over pausing — a full, fluent repeat of 90% of words beats a halting, perfect version. Pronunciation and rhythm matter, so mimic the speaker's intonation.
Describe Image template
Opening (identify what the image is: a chart, graph, photo, map). Overview (the main point or overall trend). Key features (2–3 important details or data points). Conclusion (a brief summary or observation). This structure fills 40 seconds and shows you can organise information.
Retell Lecture challenge and strategy
The lecture is fast — take brief notes on key points (not full sentences). Immediately after, use your notes to reconstruct the main idea, 2–3 supporting points and any conclusion. Speak fluently without reading notes word-for-word. The score rewards capturing the gist, not reciting every detail.
Pronunciation and fluency
PTE uses speech-recognition software, so clear articulation, natural pace and proper word stress are critical. Avoid long pauses (the system may stop recording). Use stress and intonation naturally — do not sound robotic. Practice with a native-English speaker or the free PTE practice tool.
