Always look for the programme's own intake numbers; where they are not published, class size and the number of entry routes are decent proxies.
• The English score is a floor, not a target. IELTS 6.5 clears the gate; it does not compete. Where a programme is oversubscribed, admissions staff read the band breakdown, and a strong overall score hiding a weak Writing band is a common quiet rejection. Check whether the university sets per-section minimums as well as an overall figure — many do, and applicants routinely miss it.
• Funding decisions run on a different calendar to admissions. In UK the intakes are September, January (some), but most scholarship deadlines sit weeks to months ahead of the application deadline. Applying "on time" for admission and late for money is one of the most expensive ordinary mistakes in the process, and it is entirely avoidable.
