Always look for the programme's own intake numbers; where they are not published, class size and the number of entry routes are decent proxies.
• The English score is a floor, not a target. IELTS 7 clears the gate; it does not compete. Where a programme is oversubscribed, admissions staff read the band breakdown, and a strong overall score hiding a weak Writing band is a common quiet rejection. Check whether the university sets per-section minimums as well as an overall figure — many do, and applicants routinely miss it.
• Funding decisions run on a different calendar to admissions.
