What PGWP is

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets international students who graduate from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada work for any employer, in any job, anywhere in Canada — for up to 3 years. It is one of the primary reasons Indian students choose Canada over other study destinations.

2026 eligibility changes

Key changes in effect for 2026: (1) New language requirement — you must meet English/French CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 each band or CELPIP equivalent) to get a PGWP. (2) Field-of-study restriction — some college curriculum-licensing programmes (delivered in partnership with offshore institutions) no longer qualify. University degrees and most on-campus college programmes still qualify. Always check your specific DLI and programme on the IRCC list before enrolling.

PGWP duration rules

Programme 8 months to less than 2 years → PGWP up to the length of the programme. Programme 2 years or more → PGWP up to 3 years. Combined programmes (e.g. 1-year diploma + 1-year PG certificate) may qualify for a longer PGWP if conditions are met. Always confirm your combined-programme eligibility with your DLI before starting.

PGWP and Express Entry

The PGWP gives you Canadian work experience which is a major Express Entry points booster. After 1 year of skilled work in Canada, you can apply for Canadian Experience Class (CEC). A high IELTS/CELPIP score adds Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points on top of the work experience points — many PGWP holders clear 470+ CRS and receive an invitation to apply for PR.

Common PGWP mistakes

Applying more than 180 days after graduation (you lose eligibility). Maintaining continuous full-time enrolment — any gap or part-time switch can affect eligibility. Not meeting the new language threshold. Enrolling in a non-PGWP-eligible programme thinking it qualifies. Always verify at IRCC.gc.ca before and after enrolment.

Prep your English score

The PGWP now requires CLB 7 = IELTS 6.0 in each band, or CELPIP 7 in each skill. Practise both free on LandingPrep — IELTS mocks and CELPIP-style practice — so your score is ready before you graduate.
