The GMAT Focus Edition is scored 205–805 across Quantitative, Verbal, and Data Insights, and runs about 2 hours 15 minutes. The GRE is scored 130–170 each for Quantitative and Verbal (260–340 combined) plus Analytical Writing 0–6, over about 2 hours. The GMAT is purpose-built for business reasoning (notably Data Insights), while the GRE is a general graduate-admissions test.
Business School Acceptance and Preference
Nearly all top MBA programmes (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, INSEAD, LBS) accept both the GMAT and the GRE. Historically more applicants take the GMAT, and many schools report GMAT averages, so it is the traditional default. GRE acceptance is now near-universal, so either is fine — choose the test on which you can score higher. Check each programme's stated policy.
Score Conversion (Approximate)
Business schools and test makers publish concordance tools to compare GMAT and GRE scores, but the match is not exact — the GMAT's Data Insights section has no direct GRE equivalent. Report scores in each test's own scale rather than converting. Use the official GMAC and ETS comparison tools for current, accurate equivalences.
Which Test Plays to Your Strengths
Choose the GMAT if you are strong at business-style logic, data interpretation, and multi-source reasoning. Choose the GRE if you are strong at vocabulary and reading comprehension; GRE Verbal leans heavily on these. The GRE also lets you preview your unofficial score before deciding to send it, and is often slightly cheaper. Take a practice section of each to see which suits you.
Admissions Impact and Decision Framework
Both tests carry comparable weight, and neither guarantees admission — MBA selection is holistic, weighing work experience, essays, recommendations, and interviews alongside the test. A strong score (high GMAT or 320+ GRE) makes you competitive at top schools, but exceptional experience and essays can offset a lower score. Many applicants retake and improve. If your target school's profile centres on GMAT averages, the GMAT may signal fit.
