An MS is a specialist technical degree (1–2 years, typically research or coursework) targeting depth in one field — CS, data science, finance, engineering. An MBA is a general management degree (1.5–2 years) targeting leadership and cross-functional roles. The right choice turns on where you are in your career and what you want to do next.
Work experience
Most top MBA programmes require 3–5+ years of post-undergrad work experience (average at Wharton/Booth is ~5 years). MS programmes typically accept fresh graduates or those with 0–3 years. If you are right out of college, MS almost always makes more sense.
Cost and ROI
MBA: USD 100,000–220,000 total (US top-10); salary jump to USD 120,000–180,000+ in year 1 post-MBA, so break-even in 2–3 years for top schools. MS: USD 40,000–100,000 total; tech MS (CS, DS, AI) grads earn USD 100,000–140,000 starting. Lower cost, faster break-even, but narrower career pivot ability.
Test: GMAT vs GRE
MBA programmes historically prefer GMAT Focus but accept GRE. Most MS programmes prefer GRE (GMAT accepted at many, but less common). If your target is purely MS in STEM, focus on GRE. If you are keeping MBA options open, GMAT Focus may serve you better.
For Indian students specifically
Tech MS (CS, ECE, data science) from a strong US/UK school gives an excellent STEM OPT pathway (3 years in the US), easier admission, and a lower loan burden. MBA from a top school is a career transformer but requires strong GMAT, essays, and strong professional experience. Many Indian students do MS first, work 3–5 years, then return for an MBA.
