⚡ Quick answer: Skimming is rapid reading (1–2 minutes) to grasp the main idea and paragraph structure. Scanning is targeted searching for specific keywords/numbers. In IELTS Reading, use skimming on the three passages (first 5–7 minutes total) to build a mental map of where information lives. Then scan for answers using question keywords.

Skimming & Scanning: The Foundation of IELTS Reading

Skimming is rapid reading (1–2 minutes) to grasp the main idea and paragraph structure. Scanning is targeted searching for specific keywords/numbers. In IELTS Reading, use skimming on the three passages (first 5–7 minutes total) to build a mental map of where information lives. Then scan for answers using question keywords. This two-step process prevents re-reading entire paragraphs and saves 10–15 minutes of the 60-minute test—critical for Band 8 time management.

Keyword Matching Strategy for Multiple Choice

Underline 2–3 key words in each question. Scan the passage for those exact words or close synonyms. IELTS writers often paraphrase answers, so if the question asks 'rapid expansion,' look for 'quick growth' or 'swift increase' in the text. For Band 8, avoid picking answers that match topic words but do not match the specific meaning—distinguish between 'the process is complex' (general) and 'the process is difficult to manage' (specific). Synonym recognition is the biggest Band 8 differentiator.

Conquering True/False/Not Given Questions

True: the statement agrees with the passage. False: the statement contradicts the passage. Not Given: the passage does not mention or clarify the statement. The hardest part: Not Given vs. False. If the passage says 'most cities are growing' and you see 'all cities are growing,' that is False (contradicts), not Not Given. Not Given is when the topic is not addressed—e.g., passage never mentions city growth rates at all. Band 8 students read the exact words, not assumptions. Practice this distinction in 15–20 T/F/NG questions daily.

Time Management: 20 Minutes per Passage

IELTS Reading is 60 minutes for 3 passages + 40 questions. Allocate 20 min per passage (15 min reading + questions, 5 min review). Passage 1 (easiest, ~800 words) = 15–18 min. Passage 2 (moderate, ~850 words) = 18–20 min. Passage 3 (hardest, ~900 words) = 20–22 min. Spend remaining time checking answers, especially T/F/NG. If you are behind, skip difficult questions and come back—do not lose points on easy ones.

Heading Matching: Which Heading Fits Which Paragraph?

Read each paragraph's first and last sentence to grasp the main point. Headings are often too broad (main idea), too narrow (minor detail), or misleading (related topic, wrong angle). Eliminate obviously wrong headings first. For Band 8, expect 2–3 tricky headings that sound related but do not match the paragraph's core message. One common trick: a heading matches keywords but misses the actual meaning. Read slowly for heading questions; they are worth the same as other questions but require precision.

Sentence Completion & Short Answer Questions

For sentence completion, read the stem sentence context carefully—the blank must fit grammatically and semantically. Scan the passage for the exact phrase or paraphrase. For short answers (1–3 words), copy directly from the passage; do not paraphrase or add words. IELTS marks these strictly—'economic development' is wrong if the answer is 'development.' Practice extracting exact phrases without over-explaining. Time these questions carefully; they can trap you into over-reading.

Common Band 8 Mistakes to Avoid

1) Paraphrasing short answers instead of copying (auto-mark wrong). 2) Over-thinking Not Given; if unsure, it is likely Not Given, not False. 3) Choosing answers that match keywords but not meaning (synonym trap). 4) Spending 10+ minutes on one hard question—skip and return. 5) Assuming knowledge; rely only on the passage, not outside info. 6) Mis-marking your answer sheet (double-check spelling/name before submitting). Band 8 = 36/40; one careless mistake costs you—proofread in final minutes.

Practice IELTS Reading Mocks Daily

Band 8 requires 12–16 weeks of consistent prep with 3–5 full-length reading tests weekly. Timed mocks expose your weak question types (e.g., T/F/NG, headings). Review every wrong answer—did you misunderstand, miss the word, or misread the question? Track which passage types trap you (science, history, social policy). Free full-length IELTS Reading mocks with detailed explanations are available on LandingPrep—practice daily, time yourself strictly, and review patterns weekly.
