TOEFL iBT Home (online proctored) is accepted by 99% of universities that accept TOEFL, including all Ivy League schools, top UK universities (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE), Australian Go8 institutions, and Canadian research-intensive universities. However, some countries have restrictions: the UK accepts it for Tier 4 visa purposes, Canada recognizes it for Express Entry, and the US accepts it for visa and university admissions. Confirm with your target institution, as a small number still prefer test-center TOEFL.
Countries with Limited or No TOEFL Home Acceptance
Some regions hesitate about online proctoring: parts of Middle East and Southeast Asia occasionally prefer test-center versions due to internet infrastructure concerns. A handful of conservative institutions (mainly in India and some Gulf universities) may request clarification, though TOEFL officially recognizes both equally. New Zealand, Australia, and Singapore fully accept TOEFL Home without restrictions.
Immigration & Visa Acceptance by Country
TOEFL Home scores are accepted for student visa applications in the US (I-20 eligible), UK (Tier 4/Student visa), Canada (Study Permit and Express Entry), and Australia (all visa subclasses). However, each country's immigration department has slightly different date-of-test rules—typically scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Always verify with your visa authority 30 days before applying.
Do Employers Accept TOEFL Home Edition?
Most global employers and professional bodies (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE agencies) accept TOEFL Home equally for work visa sponsorship in Canada, Australia, and the UK. The US USCIS (Green Card) process prefers standard TOEFL but increasingly accepts Home Edition. Smaller regional employers may request test-center proof; always ask the HR sponsor to confirm before taking the exam.
Top Universities Officially Accepting TOEFL Home
Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and all UC schools officially accept TOEFL Home. In the UK: Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, and all Russell Group universities accept it. Canada: University of Toronto, UBC, and McGill welcome TOEFL Home. Australia: University of Melbourne, UNSW, ANU, and Monash fully accept it. Many explicitly state this on their graduate admissions pages.
Potential Drawbacks & When to Choose Test Center
TOEFL Home requires a quiet room, reliable broadband (5 Mbps+ recommended), and camera/microphone setup—technical failures can delay results. If your internet is unstable or you prefer human proctoring, test-center TOEFL may feel safer. Some universities in countries with limited broadband (parts of Africa, Central Asia) may recommend test-center simply for reliability. Test center dates are also more frequent in some regions.
