How to take a mock so it tells you something

Most people do not have a practice-material problem. They have a practice-method problem, and it is the same one: practising in conditions that cannot surface the errors which actually cost marks.

• Sit it complete and timed, in one go. The mistakes that decide a score — misread instructions, transfer errors, rushing the last questions — only appear when you are tired and behind the clock. Listening is the longest section here at about 27 minutes, and it is where fatigue usually starts showing. A section done fresh on a Sunday afternoon proves nothing about the same section done ninety minutes into a real exam.
• Do not check answers as you go. Checking mid-test resets your concentration and quietly removes the pacing pressure you are supposed to be rehearsing. Finish, then mark.
• Review every wrong answer against a cause, not a correction. Reading the right answer teaches you almost nothing. Ask which of four things happened: you did not know it, you misread the question, you ran out of time, or you knew it and made a careless error. Those need four completely different fixes, and only the first one is solved by more study.
• Watch the pattern across mocks, not the score of one. A single result is noise. Three papers moving in one direction is a signal, and three flat results despite steady work usually mean the work is aimed at the wrong section.
• Space them out. 120 tests is enough to take one a week for most of a preparation cycle. Taking several in a row burns the material for no benefit — you cannot act on the diagnosis of one paper while you are already sitting the next.

The point of a mock is diagnosis, not a score. A paper that tells you exactly which section and which error type is costing you marks has done its job even if the number was disappointing — arguably especially then, since a comfortable score four weeks out teaches you nothing you can use.
