TOEFL 1–6 Band Scores (2026): How to Read Your Result

How the new 1–6 band scale works, how your overall score is calculated, and why a 0–120 number still appears during the transition.

The big picture

The 1–6 band scale

From 21 January 2026, TOEFL reports scores on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments (so 5.5, 6, etc.), with closer alignment to the CEFR. You get a score for each of the four sections plus an overall.

💡
Real example: A report might read Reading 5.5, Listening 5, Speaking 5, Writing 5.5 — each on the same 1–6 scale, so it's easy to see your strongest and weakest skills at a glance.
🧠 Memory hook: 1–6 in halves — read it like a CEFR level, not an old 0–120 number.

How your overall is calculated

Your overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. There's no weighting — each section counts equally.

💡
Real example: Sections averaging 5.25 round to an overall of 5.5; an average of 5.1 rounds to 5. One weak section pulls the average down, so balance pays off.
🧠 Memory hook: Add the four, divide by four, round to the nearest half.

The 0–120 score during the transition

For two years after January 2026, reports also show a comparable 0–120 overall (the midpoint of the matching range), so you can still meet universities that list requirements in the old scale.

💡
Real example: If a university still asks for 'TOEFL 90', your report's comparable 0–120 figure lets an admissions officer check that requirement while everyone gets used to 1–6.
🧠 Memory hook: Two scores for two years: your 1–6 band and a comparable 0–120.

What band should you target?

There's no single pass mark — each university sets its own requirement. Because exact CEFR-to-band cutoffs can vary by institution, check the specific score your target programme asks for rather than assuming a universal number.

💡
Real example: Two universities might both want 'strong' English but list different band or 0–120 minimums. Confirm each programme's stated requirement before you decide your goal score.
🧠 Memory hook: No universal pass mark — aim at YOUR university's stated requirement.
