TOEFL 1–6 Band Scores (2026): How to Read Your Result
How the new 1–6 band scale works, how your overall score is calculated, and why a 0–120 number still appears during the transition.
The big picture
- TOEFL 1–6 band score (2026)
- 1–6 scale — Half-point bands, CEFR-aligned
- Four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing each scored
- Overall — Average of the four, rounded to nearest half
- 0–120 too — Comparable score shown for a 2-year transition
The 1–6 band scale
From 21 January 2026, TOEFL reports scores on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments (so 5.5, 6, etc.), with closer alignment to the CEFR. You get a score for each of the four sections plus an overall.
How your overall is calculated
Your overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. There's no weighting — each section counts equally.
The 0–120 score during the transition
For two years after January 2026, reports also show a comparable 0–120 overall (the midpoint of the matching range), so you can still meet universities that list requirements in the old scale.
What band should you target?
There's no single pass mark — each university sets its own requirement. Because exact CEFR-to-band cutoffs can vary by institution, check the specific score your target programme asks for rather than assuming a universal number.
