How to read the result — and where it stops being reliable

A converted score is an estimate, not an equivalence. Concordance tables are built by the test makers from statistical comparisons of large candidate groups. They describe where an average candidate with one score tends to land on another test — they do not promise that you would score that. Two tests measuring the same language with different task types will rank the same person differently, sometimes by a meaningful margin.

Institutions decide what they accept, and many accept only one test. A conversion showing you already meet a requirement on a test you have not taken is not an argument you can make to an admissions office. Use the conversion to choose which test to sit and what to aim for, then sit that test.

Per-section minimums do not convert cleanly. Where a requirement is written per skill rather than overall, converting an overall score tells you almost nothing about whether you clear it. Convert section by section if you convert at all.

Using a converted score without getting caught out

Convert in the direction you are travelling, then round against yourself. Concordance is not symmetric in practice: a table that maps A to B and one that maps B to A can disagree at the edges. When the result lands within a point or half a band of a requirement, treat it as below the requirement rather than at it, because that is how an admissions office will read a real score in the same position.

The conversion says nothing about what the tests ask of you. Two tests can want the same level of English through completely different tasks — an integrated task that combines reading, listening and speaking is a different job from a standalone response, even at an identical converted score. That difference is exactly what a conversion strips out, and it is often the reason someone scores below their converted estimate on a first attempt.

Use it to choose, then stop using it. The conversion is genuinely useful for deciding which test to sit and roughly what to aim for. Once you have chosen, work from the real scale of the test you are actually taking — carrying the converted figure into your preparation just adds a layer of error between you and the number that counts.
