What actually decides this application

• How this compares in Switzerland. ETH Zurich asks for PTE 68, against a median of 68 across the 1 other Switzerland universities in our dataset. That is exactly the national norm, so a score built for this application should travel across your whole shortlist.
• The requirement is almost always per section, not an overall score. This is the most expensive misreading in the whole process. Where a university publishes an overall figure and per-section minimums, your lowest section is what counts — a comfortable overall band hiding one weak section is rejected, and it is rejected after you have paid for the test. Check ETH Zurich's per-section minimums, not just the headline.
• The programme can ask for more than the university. The figure on this page is the institutional baseline. Individual departments — commonly law, medicine, teaching, journalism and anything with a placement or registration requirement — routinely set a higher bar, and theirs is the one that applies to you. Always confirm on the specific programme page.
• Scores expire, and the clock is on the test date. Most English test scores are accepted for two years from the date you sat the test, not from when you applied. Sitting the test very early to "get it out of the way" can mean re-sitting it before you enrol.

Planning the test around a ETH Zurich application

The English test is the only part of this application that is entirely within your control and entirely on your own schedule, which makes it the wrong thing to leave until last — and the thing most applicants leave until last.

• Work backwards from the deadline, not forwards from today. ETH Zurich's typical deadline is Dec 15 (Fall). Results take time to issue and longer to be received and processed, and a resit needs a free slot plus another wait. Two clear months before the deadline is a working minimum for a first attempt; three if you want a resit to remain possible.
• Diagnose before you study, not after. A full timed mock tells you which section is actually short. Most people study the section they enjoy, which is rarely the one costing them the place, and against a requirement of 68 the margin for a weak section is usually zero.
• Score the test you are taking. Test-day loss is very often strategy rather than English — mismanaged timing, misread task instructions, unfamiliar question formats. That is cheap to fix with full-length timed practice and expensive to discover on the day.
• Do not book on a good practice day. Book when you are hitting the target consistently, including in your weakest section. A single strong mock is noise; three in a row is a signal.

ETH Zurich runs Fall (Sep) and Spring (Feb) intakes. If you miss the English requirement for one, the honest options are usually to take the next intake with a better score or to apply elsewhere with the score you have — a conditional offer with an English condition attached still requires you to meet it, and the pre-sessional English courses that sometimes substitute for it carry their own fees and their own entry bar.
