⚡ Quick answer: Most Canadian study-permit decisions are made on your documents rather than a formal interview, but an officer (or a visa-application-centre officer) may ask questions, and a strong, consistent file is what gets you approved. Note: the Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed on 8 November 2024, so all applicants now use the regular study-permit stream. Officers want to see a genuine student, clear proof of funds, and a study plan that makes sense for your background.

How the Study permit assessment works

You apply for a study permit after receiving a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) where required. Since SDS ended in November 2024, everyone applies through the regular stream. Interviews are not always required, but if asked, expect questions about your study plan, finances and ties to home. A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) and clear funding evidence remain strong proof you can support yourself.

Study plan

Why did you choose this college/university and program in Canada?
💡 Give specific reasons tied to your field and career — the program content, the institution's strengths, co-op/work-integrated learning. Avoid “it's easy to get PR” type answers.
How does this program relate to your previous education or work?
💡 Show a logical progression. If you're switching fields, explain the genuine reason clearly.
Why study in Canada rather than your home country?
💡 Connect it to the quality or relevance of the program and your goals, honestly.

Finances

How will you pay for tuition and living costs?
💡 Know your tuition, the cost of living, and your funding sources. A GIC plus clear bank statements or an education loan are strong evidence.
Who is funding your studies and what do they do?
💡 State your sponsor and their income; it must match your documents and be realistic for the total cost.

Ties & intentions

What will you do after you finish your studies?
💡 You can mention a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), but present a genuine plan. Officers assess whether you're a genuine temporary resident, so ties to your home country help.
Do you have family in Canada?
💡 Answer honestly and consistently with your application.

Why applications get refused

How to prepare

  1. Prepare a clear, honest study plan / statement of purpose that explains your choices.
  2. Have solid proof of funds ready — a GIC and/or bank statements and any loan sanction letter.
  3. Know your program, institution and total costs from memory.
  4. Make sure every document is consistent with what you say.
  5. Confirm you have the latest required documents (Letter of Acceptance, PAL where needed) — rules changed after the SDS closure.

⚠️ Answer honestly — never script or fake it

Visa officers are trained to spot rehearsed or false answers, and inconsistency with your documents is the fastest way to be refused. Use these questions to practise and to make sure your real reasons, finances and plans are clear and consistent — never to invent a story. Always confirm current requirements on the official government website before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Does Canada interview every study-permit applicant?
No — most decisions are document-based, but an officer may ask questions and can request an interview. A complete, consistent application is the key to approval.
Is the Student Direct Stream (SDS) still available?
No. IRCC closed the SDS (and the Nigeria Student Express) on 8 November 2024. All study-permit applications are now processed through the regular stream.
Is a GIC still useful after SDS ended?
Yes. While the GIC was a fixed SDS requirement, it remains one of the clearest ways to show you can cover your living costs in the regular stream. Always confirm current proof-of-funds requirements on the official IRCC website.
