UK Student Visa Interview Questions (Credibility Interview) 2026
Genuine, consistent answers — not memorised scripts — are what pass a visa interview. Use these as practice prompts, then answer in your own words.
▶ Plan your study abroad freeHow the Student visa (credibility interview) assessment works
After getting your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor and meeting the financial and English requirements, UKVI may invite you to a credibility interview, often conducted over video call. It is assessed on whether you are a genuine student making a credible choice. There are no trick questions — the officer simply wants consistent, informed answers in understandable English.
Course & university
💡 Give specific, personal reasons — modules, reputation in your field, location, career relevance. Show you researched it rather than picked it at random.
💡 Know the basics: length, key modules, assessment style. This is the most common place under-prepared applicants slip up.
💡 It's fine to have considered others — explain honestly why you chose this one.
Why the UK & your background
💡 Connect it to your field and goals (e.g. the one-year master's, specific expertise, industry links). Avoid generic answers.
💡 Show a logical progression from what you've done to what you'll do next.
Finances
💡 Know your tuition, the UKVI maintenance funds requirement, and exactly where the money comes from (savings, loan, sponsor). Your answer must match your financial evidence.
💡 State clearly and consistently with your documents.
After your studies
💡 You may mention the Graduate Route (post-study work), but give a genuine, thought-through plan rather than a vague one.
Why applications get refused
- Not knowing basic details of your own course or university (the most common failure).
- Answers that contradict your application, CAS or financial evidence.
- English that's too weak to understand the questions or respond clearly.
- Vague or generic reasons for choosing the UK, the course or the university.
- Signs the choice isn't genuine — e.g. a course unrelated to your background with no explanation.
How to prepare
- Re-read your own application, CAS and personal statement before the interview.
- Be ready to describe your course modules, fees and funding from memory.
- Test your camera, microphone and internet beforehand if it's a video interview.
- Answer in your own words and in clear English — genuine beats rehearsed.
- Keep your documents (CAS, financial proof, qualifications) to hand during the call.
⚠️ Answer honestly — never script or fake it
Visa officers are trained to spot rehearsed or false answers, and inconsistency with your documents is the fastest way to be refused. Use these questions to practise and to make sure your real reasons, finances and plans are clear and consistent — never to invent a story. Always confirm current requirements on the official government website before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
- Does every UK Student visa applicant get an interview?
- No. UKVI selects many applicants for a short credibility interview, often by video, but not everyone is interviewed. Prepare as if you will be.
- What is the UK credibility interview checking?
- That you are a genuine student: that you understand and have genuinely chosen your course and university, can fund your studies, and meet the English requirement.
- What happens if I fail the credibility interview?
- Your visa can be refused on credibility grounds even if your paperwork is fine. That's why knowing your course, finances and reasons genuinely — not by script — matters.
