Cost of Studying in Canada for Indian Students 2026: Tuition, Living & Total Budget

A realistic, all-in budget for studying in Canada in 2026 — tuition by program, living costs by city, proof-of-funds, and the total first-year amount Indian students should plan for.

Tuition fees by program

International tuition in Canada typically runs CAD 15,000–30,000 per year for undergraduate and diploma programs, and CAD 17,000–35,000+ for master's, with business and STEM at the higher end. Public colleges (diplomas, PG certificates) are cheaper than universities and remain popular for the work-pathway. Always check the specific institution — fees vary widely.

Living costs by city

Budget roughly CAD 1,200–2,000 per month depending on the city. Toronto and Vancouver are the most expensive (rent alone can be CAD 900–1,500 for a shared place); Calgary, Winnipeg, Halifax and smaller towns are far cheaper. IRCC's living-cost benchmark for proof of funds is CAD 20,635 per year (outside Quebec) on top of tuition.

Proof of funds and the GIC

For a study permit you must show first-year tuition plus CAD 20,635 in living funds. The cleanest way to evidence living funds is a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a Canadian bank. Note: the SDS fast-track stream was discontinued in late 2024, so all students now apply through the regular stream — but a GIC still makes your funds easy to prove.

One-time and hidden costs

Plan for the study-permit fee (CAD 150), biometrics (CAD 85), flight (₹60,000–1,10,000), health insurance, and a laptop and winter clothing on arrival. Keep a buffer of CAD 2,000–3,000 for the first month before any part-time income starts.

Total first-year budget

All-in, most Indian students should plan for CAD 35,000–55,000 (roughly ₹22–34 lakh) for the first year, tuition plus living plus one-time costs. Part-time work (now up to 24 hours/week during sessions) and post-study work permits help recover this over time.
