Cost of Studying in USA for Indian Students 2026: Tuition, Living & Total Budget

A realistic all-in budget for an MS or undergrad in the USA in 2026 — tuition by university type, living costs by city tier, F-1 visa funds, and how to cut the bill with assistantships.

Tuition by university type

Public/state universities charge roughly USD 20,000–35,000 per year for international students; private universities USD 35,000–60,000+. An MS is usually 1.5–2 years; undergrad is 4 years. STEM programs cost more but open a 3-year OPT (STEM extension) work window.

Living costs by city tier

Budget USD 10,000–18,000 per year for living. High-cost metros (New York, Bay Area, Boston) run higher; the Midwest and South are far cheaper. On-campus housing and sharing apartments cut costs significantly.

F-1 visa financial proof

For the I-20 and F-1 visa you must show funds covering the first year of tuition plus living (often USD 35,000–70,000 depending on the school). Sources can be savings, an education loan sanction letter, or a sponsor affidavit with bank statements. Keep a clean money trail.

One-time costs

SEVIS fee (USD 350), DS-160 visa fee (USD 185), flights (₹70,000–1,30,000), and initial setup. Add GRE/TOEFL/IELTS test fees during the application phase.

Cut the cost

Assistantships (TA/RA) and graduate fellowships can waive tuition and pay a stipend — apply early and email professors. Scholarships, in-state tuition after a year (some states), and on-campus jobs (up to 20 hrs/week) all help. A strong GRE/TOEFL score boosts funding odds.

Total budget

All-in, most Indian MS students plan for USD 50,000–90,000 (roughly ₹42–75 lakh) across the degree before any assistantship offset. Use LandingPrep's free GRE/TOEFL mocks and the free college predictor and education-loan comparison to target high-ROI, funding-friendly universities.
