Why study in the UK?

What it costs

International tuition is set by each university and is not capped — roughly GBP 11,400–38,000/year for undergraduate and GBP 12,000–50,000+/year for postgraduate (taught master's are often GBP 15,000–25,000). Maintenance for the visa is GBP 1,529/month (London) or GBP 1,171/month (elsewhere) for up to 9 months. Budget also for the visa fee (about GBP 558) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (about GBP 776/year). Estimate your full budget with the cost calculator and see the UK cost breakdown.

Admission & English

The student visa

With your CAS and financial evidence (held 28 consecutive days), you apply for the Student visa, pay the fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, give biometrics, and (from many countries including India) provide a TB test certificate. Use the document checklist to gather everything, and rehearse with the visa-interview coach.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for a UK student visa in 2026?
You must show course fees plus living costs (maintenance) of GBP 1,529/month if studying in London or GBP 1,171/month elsewhere, for up to 9 months — so about GBP 13,761 (London) or GBP 10,539 (outside London) of maintenance, on top of your tuition. The money must sit in your account for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
How long can I stay in the UK after my degree?
The Graduate Route lets you stay to work for 2 years after a bachelor's or master's (3 years after a PhD). Note the announced change: for applications made from 1 January 2027 the post-study period drops to 18 months (PhD stays 3 years).
Can I work while studying in the UK?
Yes — degree-level students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays.
Can I bring my family on a UK student visa?
Since January 2024, students on taught master's and most other courses can no longer bring dependants. Only students on PhD/research programmes (and government-sponsored students) can bring family.
Do I need IELTS for the UK?
You need to prove English at roughly CEFR B2 level, but IELTS is not the only accepted test — universities and UKVI accept several tests, and some applicants are exempt (e.g. from majority-English-speaking countries or with an English-taught degree). Check your university's list.
