These are the typical minimums the checker above scores you against — a realistic floor for mainstream undergraduate and taught-Master's entry. They are a starting point, not a guarantee.

A dash means that combination isn't a common route — not that the test is never accepted. Always confirm the exact requirement with the university and the visa authority.

Why "eligible" is only half the answer

• The university minimum and the visa minimum are different bars. You must clear both, and they're set by different bodies — meeting one tells you nothing about the other.
• Per-section minimums catch people out. Many universities want an overall band and no individual band below a floor (often 5.5 or 6.0). A strong overall can still be rejected on one weak skill.
• Competitive courses sit well above the floor. Meeting the minimum makes you eligible, not competitive — top programmes often expect a band or two higher.
• Requirements shift. Visa English rules in particular change with policy; a figure that was right last intake may not be right this one.
• If you're just short on one skill, check whether your destination accepts IELTS One Skill Retake before rebooking the whole test.

How to read the result — and where it stops being reliable

This narrows a list; it does not make a decision. The output is based on published requirements and the figures you enter. Admissions decisions weigh your statement, references, the fit between your background and the specific programme, and how strong the applicant pool is that year — none of which any calculator can see.

Programme requirements beat institutional ones. The figures behind results like these are usually institution-level baselines. Individual departments routinely set a higher bar, and theirs is the one that applies to you. Always confirm on the specific programme page before you rule yourself in or out.

Treat a marginal result as a reason to check, not to stop. Requirements move between admission cycles, and several routes accept a lower score with a pre-sessional English course or a foundation year attached. A near miss is worth an email to the admissions office.

What to do with a borderline result

Ask the admissions office directly — they answer, and it costs nothing. A short, specific email naming the programme and your actual numbers gets a more accurate answer than any calculator, and asking has never counted against an applicant. Published requirements are frequently a guide rather than a hard floor, particularly where an applicant is strong elsewhere.

Build a list, not a bet. A sensible shortlist spans clear-admits, realistic targets and one or two stretches. The most common error is not aiming too high — it is a list where every entry is a stretch, which feels ambitious and routinely ends with no offer at all.

Check for the conditional routes before you rule anything out. Pre-sessional English, foundation years, pathway programmes and conditional offers exist precisely for applicants who are close but not clear. They carry extra time and extra fees, so they are not free — but "not eligible yet" and "not eligible" are different answers, and only one of them means stop.
